Two Able Skills students out on portfolio placement doing practical gas work under supervision.

The time you spend completing your gas portfolio is undoubtedly one of the most crucial aspects of your training and is where you’ll begin to get your first real taste of what it’s like to work in the industry.

This period allows you to combine the practical and the theory by putting your knowledge into action in real-world work environments while still under the supervision of a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer to gain essential on-the-job experience.

What is covered in a gas portfolio?

Your gas portfolio of evidence needs to include a variety of supervised work examples that prove your competence as a gas engineer. Throughout the portfolio stage, you’ll gather photos and paperwork which is signed by a qualified engineer with their gas safe number to prove you’re able to safely carry out work.

The portfolio must include evidence of:

  • Boiler installations including pipework
  • Servicing boilers
  • Installation pipe defects / unsafe situations
  • Tightness testing
  • Gas escapes
  • Purging
  • Meter regulator settings check
  • Combustion analysis and flame pictures
  • Gas rates
  • Operating pressures at appliances
  • Ventilation checks
  • Control faults

Once your portfolio is completed, you’ll then be able to move on to the next stage of training which is completing your formal gas assessments (ACS).
