The work of shadow energy and climate change minister Huw Irranca-Davies is set to be followed closely by tradesmen who have taken PV training qualifications.

According to Business Green, the MP is writing to the government to clarify solar panel planning rules, since many people in Cumbria are still being told by their local council that they must apply for a Building Regulations approval.

This comes despite previous guidance showing that homeowners do not need to submit such paperwork if they use professionals with PV training who are listed on the Competent Person Scheme.

Speaking to the green news provider, director of solar panel installation enterprise Eco Environment David Hunt said: "I know other installers in other parts of the country have been told they need planning permission, which you haven't needed since 2008."

Mr Irranca-Davies has been the MP for Ogmore in the South Wales Valleys since 2002, after the veteran politician and government whip Sir Ray Powell passed away.
