Wallpapering is in vogue currently, according to one industry source, which could lead to greater take-up of decorating courses.

Jan Williams, assistant at Wallpaperdirect, suggested the impact of having home makeover television shows has led to many people deciding to redecorate their properties.

She suggested that wallpapering has "definitely" evolved in the past few years, which may lead to homeowners deciding to go on decorating courses to gain all the necessary expertise to transform their home.

Regarding current trends, Ms Williams said: "At the moment metallics are quite big, flock has made a huge comeback in the last 18 months. Themes are big, [especially in] some of the children's papers that are coming through."

Her comments were made in response to research by Halifax, which found that 56 per cent of homeowners have carried out some sort of improvement on their property.

The study showed that people spent an average of £6,362 in the past year on such projects.
