A student has used the know-how he is gaining on decorating courses to win the southern heat of the SkillBuild 2010 construction contest.

James Balbi said that he is looking forward to representing the region at the finals when they are held in Wales in September.

His achievements show the value of studying decorating courses in order to get ahead of other people in the profession.

The 21-year-old explained to Get Bracknell: "The regional heat was quite challenging as there was a lot to do, but it covered all the skills that I use on a daily basis."

Mr Balbi came first in the painting and decorating category of the SkillBuild contest and he was quoted as saying that he has enjoyed the competition so far.

SkillBuild 2010 sees trainees and apprentices from across the UK compete against each other in ten different disciplines such as joinery, carpentry and roofing, with the maximum entry age being 21 years old.
