Don't fall victim to Carbon Monoxide this Christmas!

Shortly after 6pm on Saturday evening, a crew from Carlisle east fire station were called out to a property in Biglands, just north of Wigton. The resident was complaining that he felt very ill and that his pet dog was also showing signs of illness. After checking the property it was immediately clear that there was some sort of leak causing carbon monoxide to be present in the air. They evacuated and ventilated the property, and left the incident in the hands of a gas engineer! Luckily in this particular incident nobody was seriously injured, however, it raised a few questions about how much do people really know about the dangers of CO?

Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

Around 50 people die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning and that figure seems to be increasing year after year! This type of Gas related injury or even death can be easily prevented. Obviously, during this time of the year people become more reliant on their boilers so doesn't it make sense to call out a Gas Engineer to service your boiler that most likely has not been looked at in several years? Specifically for the prevention of harm from CO (Carbon Monoxide) you can purchase a detector online for around £10-20 on websites that you order from all the time such as Amazon!

Everything that you will need to begin work is included in this package apart from registration with the Gas Safe Register which you will have to do on your own!

How do I become Gas Safe Registered?

You must be Gas Safe Registered by law to carry out gas work in the UK! It is much easier than you think and can be done online for an application fee of £365 which will save you a pretty penny if caught carrying out illegal gas work! To apply you will need to have completed a recognised competency test either an NVQ or an ACS!

An ACS  assessment will need to be completed before you are eligible for Gas Safe registration and this is a requirement for all operatives involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances and pipe-work installations. Also, every Gas Safe registered business renews their registration on an annual basis and updates their qualifications every 5 years, meaning you will need to refresh your memory on gas safety every 5-years!
