The electrician in question had carried out the work between March and August and installed a boiler on the 24th October at a domestic property in Rossendale without being Gas Safe registered. This is illegal no matter the level of qualifications you hold...not being registered with the Gas Safe Register is illegal if you plan to carry out any work of this kind in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey!

Following the concerns of installation defects put forward by the family that lives in the house - Gas Safe inspectors checked and found the work was at risk and not to current standards. The boiler was apparently installed without a flue connected...In the end, the electrician received a 26 week suspended sentence to 12 months, 150 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay costs of £2,298.20. Which could have been avoided if he applied to the gas safe register, it's simple, don't carry out gas work if you're not registered, because it will come back to haunt you - the purpose of the register is to keep the public and you as a trader safe from the dangers involved in gas.

What is the Gas Safe Register?

Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register! The purpose of this registration body is to ensure that the public and the engineer are safe. They do this by inspecting the work of Gas Safe registered engineers and investigating reports of illegal gas work. Additionally keeping the list up-to-date and accurate means that they can keep unqualified workers out of the industry. To check an engineers legitimacy, ask them for their ID card and type in the unique card number into - www.gassaferegister.co.uk/
