Renewable energy courses could be popular among people aiming to move into the sector, with a new report indicating that thousands of new green jobs will be created in the coming years.

Published by RenewableUK and Energy & Utility Skills, the study predicted that the industry has the potential to bring about nearly 90,000 jobs by 2021, if government policies create the right environment.

It said the authorities need to support the training of new recruits to ensure that there is not a skills shortage in the green jobs market, which would severely hamper growth.

Commenting on the findings, chief executive of RenewableUK Maria McCaffery said: "We must ensure that the right training is available to ensure that the workforce has the appropriate skills to serve this dynamic sector."

The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently reported that carbon emissions from government offices have been slashed by 13.8 per cent in the past year.
