Help from tradespersons who have taken an electrician training course and have approved electrical qualifications should be sought to avoid common pitfalls seen during DIY projects, Home & Garden Television (HGTV) has revealed.

According to the media company, it could be extremely dangerous if an electrician is employed to perform electrical work if they do not have the necessary skills to do so.

"Never let anyone other than a licensed electrician repair or alter the wiring in your home," it said.

The same rules should be followed by householders when it comes to plumbing work too, HGTV added.

Other tips the firm gave for DIYers carrying out new projects were to always wear goggles and ensure that building permits are applied for if necessary and taken into account while undertaking the scheme.

The Gas Safe Register also advises homeowners to always call out a Gas Safe registered engineer to perform work on gas appliances, as not doing so could put them at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and other health problems.
