Carrying out DIY work without electrical and plumbing qualifications could be a costly mistake.

Research carried out by insurance provider LV= revealed that work done to a poor standard can reduce the value of a property by up to five per cent.

Furthermore, the poll revealed that around 900,000 people have attempted major work, such as gas repairs, without the help of a professional.

John O'Roarke, managing director at LV=, commented: "With house prices falling or stagnating in some parts of the UK, it's understandable that many homeowners should try to bump up the value of their properties through DIY home improvements."

However, he added that bungling jobs can be dangerous, costly and have serious consequences.

Speaking recently, Blane Judd, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering said homeowners planning to get their boiler replaced in the near future should make sure they enlist the help of a properly qualified engineer.
