When entering the construction industry, particularly in the gas or plumbing industry, for the first time, deciding whether you’ll want to work in a domestic or commercial setting can be difficult.

For that reason, it’s not uncommon for gas engineers to initially complete their domestic training, and pursue their commercial qualifications a bit further down the line.

Given the regularity of this scenario, the expert gas tutors here at Able Skills have created a course dedicated to gas engineers who are looking to switch from domestic work to commercial.

Who is the Commercial Gas Changeover course aimed at?

The Commercial Gas Changeover course is for engineers who already hold their CCN1 – Domestic Core Gas Safety qualification and are working in a domestic gas setting.

The course is primarily aimed at existing domestic gas engineers who want to either switch to commercial work or add commercial work to their overall offering. However, it can also be useful to those who have already held a commercial core gas qualification and are looking to renew but need a refresher.

What does the course cover?

The course has been designed by vastly experienced gas engineers to provide individuals with the opportunity to achieve certification for the most common categories of commercial gas work.

This includes the commission, service, repair and breakdown of commercial direct and indirect heating appliances and equipment, as well as the commission, service, repair and breakdown of overhead luminous radiant plaque and radiant tube heaters.

The learning also covers the testing and direct purging of small low-pressure commercial gas installations and first fix pipe installations.

After the initial training, ACS assessments will be completed, covering the following modules:

  • CODNCO1 - Change over core gas safety - domestic to commercial
  • ICPN1 - First fix pipe installations
  • TPCP1A - Testing and direct purging of small low pressure commercial gas installations
  • CIGA1 - Commission, service, repair and breakdown of commercial indirect fired heating appliances and equipment
  • CORT1 - Commission, service, repair and breakdown of commercial overhead luminous radiant plaque and radiant tube heaters
  • CDGA1 - Commission, service, repair and breakdown of commercial direct fired heating appliances and equipment

How long does the Commercial Gas Changeover course take to complete?

The training and assessment period should take a total of 10 days (two weeks) to complete.

What are the benefits of completing the course?

Naturally, being able to offer both domestic and commercial gas services can make you more appealing to both potential customers and employers, as you’re able to complete a wider range of tasks, therefore boosting your employment opportunities and potentially your earnings.
