Let's take a look at the different options for carpentry training courses...

Depending on what you want to achieve as a Carpenter, there are different starting points and different courses you may need to consider. We offer a range of courses for DIY training to City & Guilds Qualifications and NVQs. If you have little or no experience at all and you want to get a taste of the trade then why not take on our Introduction to Carpentry first. This is 5-days long and will give you an opportunity to learn the basics and to see if you enjoy the daily tasks of a carpenter. The course actually results in a City & Guilds certificate due to our efforts in making this course as comprehensive as possible.

If you are a complete novice and looking to work domestically as a Carpenter, we offer a 6-week Accredited City & Guilds Qualification. This will provide you with the skills and confidence you need to carry out a range of carpentry work in someone's home. This is the ultimate course when looking to gain new skills and ability in this trade, you will take on a huge range of tasks and gain some real hands-on practical experience. Also, this programme of learning will allow you to upgrade and take on offer carpentry and joinery courses. Along, with Carpentry Courses, we also offer combined Carpentry and Joinery Courses.

The accredited course will cover:

  • Fixing architraves and skirting
  • Constructing and fixing hatch linings
  • Fitting locks and latches
  • Constructing studwork with opening
  • Constructing and installing door lining
  • Hanging a door
  • Fitting floor joists and installing floor coverings
  • Installing and bracing trussed rafters
  • Setting out and cutting one pair of common rafters

Carpentry courses at Able Skills.

Alternatively, if your aim is to work on-site as a Carpenter, you will need to take the 8-week NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Course. This programme will get you to the point of being ready to go out on-site as a Carpenter. However, to gain the NVQ you will need to build a portfolio of work evidence when working on-site and have two site assessments from our NVQ assessor. Once you've gained the NVQ you will then be able to get a CSCS Skilled Workers card which will give you access to all site work.
