How you can keep customers safe as a Gas Engineer!

Here at Able Skills, we are proud of the Gas courses that we provide! We are also proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2020, taking place 14 – 20 September. We try to instill into our students the importance of Gas safety, however, there is always more to learn and even experienced Gas Engineers could do more to support people in protecting themselves from the dangerous aspects of Gas.  Today, we are going to look at a few extra things you could be doing as a Gas Engineer to help keep your local community and customers safe...

How you can keep customers safe as a Gas Engineer!

  • Firstly, check their gas appliances every year. Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tenants should be aware that it’s their landlord’s responsibility to arrange this. A free email and/or text reminder can be set up at Staygassafe!
  • Next, let them know that next time they have a Gas Engineer in their home that's not you, they should be asking to see the engineers' Gas Safe ID to check their engineer is Gas Safe registered and qualified for the type of work they need doing. Let them know they can find this information on the Gas Safe Register website and the back of the Gas Safe ID card. When you go to your customer’s home, be proud to show them your card before they ask for it.
  • Ask, try to make sure that they understand the six main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. As this could help them identify any problems later down the line in terms of Gas leaks of any kind.
  • Finally, Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm. Alarms should be marked EN50291 and display the British Standards Kitemark. Many people don't have these types of detectors or alarms within their homes and you could be saving them any troubles as they can identify whether or not there is a CO leak within their homes quickly before any health issues arise.
