Electrical and plumbing training courses could become more popular after the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills announced that new guidance is now available for employers about training.

A new right is to come into effect in April this year, entitling employees to request time off to undertake training.

To prepare businesses for the legislation, the department has offered information and guidance through Business Link and the DirectGov websites.

Business Link is a free business support and advice portal and is available both online and through local advisers.

Skills Minister Kevin Brennan commented that it is essential that firms who do not speak about training with their workers begin to do so.

"Now, more than ever, we need learning and training opportunities in place that empower people to gain the skills and training they need to get on," he said.

However, he added that many organisations are currently aware of having a highly-skilled workforce.
