Attendees of electrical courses could be presented with an increased range of employment opportunities in the near future as part of new green energy plans by the government.

Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has outlined plans for a new Green Deal initiative at the Economist UK Energy Summit, which will see billions of pounds committed to retrofitting homes with energy-efficient improvements.

This will include the addition of insulation to as many as 14 million homes across the UK, as well as introducing features such as smart meters and smart grids to encourage better-regulated energy use.

The extensive refurbishment work would also serve to create thousands of jobs, as well as helping to boost the UK economy as a whole.

Mr Huhne said: "All in all, this will send the right signal to the energy efficiency industry, providing investment confidence and job opportunities."

The news supports comments by the Federation of Master Builders earlier this month that demand for construction industry workers is set to increase due to a rise in energy-efficient retrofitting.
