Throughout our Meet the Team series, we’ve been catching up with the very people helping shape the next generation of trade talent, asking them to recount their own experiences of working in construction and finding out what it is that attracted them to teaching in the first place.

Next up, we sat down with Jo Holloway, one of our plastering specialists, to find out a little more about what makes him tick.

Could you give us a little insight into your own background and experience?

“I pursued a full apprenticeship after leaving school, then went on to work for a large company delivering quality work, mostly on large developments in London—things like hotels, theatres, banks and office complexes.”

What is the most rewarding part of being a tutor at Able Skills?

“Consistency! Most staff have been working here for a long time, so we all really know each other’s attributes.”

What sets Able Skills apart from other training providers?

“There’s a really good working environment and a good ratio of tutors to trainees.”

What are the most important things to factor in when teaching trade courses?

“You must be able to make the learner understand that improvement comes with practice, it's not given.”

What steps are taken to ensure participants are prepared for employment upon completion of more advanced courses?

“They are given sensible and sound advice laying out their options, and we also offer suggestions of how and where to advertise their services once they’ve achieved their qualifications.”

If you could offer your students a key piece of advice, what would it be?

“Start small, grow alongside an experienced tradesperson.”

Each of our tutors is an expert in their respective field and the decades worth of experience between them all is frankly, too long to even count.
