New wireless home security technology is expected to grow in popularity, which could increase the demand for workers who have taken electrical courses.

According to Martin West, owner and business strategist of Locked Up Monitored Security - which recently exhibited at the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham - wire-free home automation offers a number of benefits for homeowners.

These include ease of use, the fact that it is pet proof and the ability to operate it from a remote location.

"If you want the house to look occupied, you can work lights, close curtains, switch music on and off" from a laptop or a mobile phone, he explained.

He added that the security system arms itself when people leave the property and users can tune the home automation panel in to broadband if they wish.

However, such complex electrical systems could end up baffling householders and drive the need for top-quality tradespersons who have gained their electrician qualifications by completing an electrical course.
