Today's Painting & Decorating centre where students are taking on Introductory courses. Let's take a look at the course options!

These three students have all just started on their introduction to painting & decorating courses, this course involves learning the basic principles of decorating including the application of wallpaper seen in this video! This is a practical course, entirely hands-on, working on a variety of areas such as walls and ceilings, skirting boards and window frames. You will have guidance from instructors who will provide demonstrations to ensure your understanding of the task in hand.

If you are looking to get into painting and decorating, applying for a course here is a great start. You will need to think about what you want to get out of a course, are you looking to do some DIY? or are you looking to take it on professionally? Want to own your own company? These are the questions you should be asking yourself before enrolling on a course. Depending on your end goal, we have diffrent courses to suit diffrent needs, make sure that you are on the right path towards succeeding in your ambitions!

No Experience?

If you have no experience working in the field, and you are looking to gain the basics for some DIY or for a stepping stone into learning further on. You should first consider enrolling on an Introductory course. We have an Introduction to Painting & Decorating Course that is a week-long and will give you a basic understanding of what work will be like on-site as a professional! During this course you will cover the following aspects:

Repairing imperfections, you will apply water and oil-based products using brushes and rollers, you will learn how to cut around obstructions, openings and fittings and you will also learn how to properly cut, paste and hang wallpaper.

Also, if you are looking to take on specifically wallpapering for any specific reason we run a 5-day Wallpapering Course so that you can master this particular skill!

Some Experience?

If you have some experience, but you are looking to gain a qualification, then we have a few options available to you!

The options include:

The Level 2 Diploma course is relatively new. The course is a real mix of practical and theory-based assessments. This is a great opportunity for those of you looking to come straight in at level 2. This course is ideal for those of you who already have a basic understanding of the industry as a whole and you are looking to build on that further, maybe add decorating to your skill-set.

If you are really considering taking up this trade as a profession you need to commit to either the 5-week or 10-week course, the City & Guilds Painting & decorating course if successful will result in you receiving a City & Guilds certificate! Obviously, the completion of a Level 2 Painting & Decorating Diploma Course will land you with a Diploma! You need to consider the amount of time you can dedicate to this training, both of these courses can be taken over weekends as well for those who have prior commitments and or cannot find the time but would love to take on a course.

How do weekend courses work?

For example, if you would like to take the Level 2 Painting & Decorating Diploma Course over a series of weekends you need to make up the time it would take if you were on full-time. The Diploma Course is 10-weeks or 50-days meaning you could take it over a series of 25-weekends!

Experienced Worker?

EWPA

Experienced worker looking for NVQ? We offer an EWPA or Experienced Worker Practical Assesment for experienced workers who need an NVQ. This course is a fast-track route, you will need to have at least 5-years experience working as a painter & decorator to enrol on this route. The way this path works:

Step 1: Upon contacting Able Skills, we will arrange a profiling appointment for you and make recommendations of the kind of information and evidence you may wish to bring along to support your application as an experienced Painter & Decorator.

Step 2: At your profiling appointment (which will last for approximately 2 hours) our Painting & Decorating assessor will introduce you to the process and make an initial assessment to ensure you are suitable to qualify through this method. They will look over any items of Painting & Decorating ‘evidence’ you may have with you, evidence you provide can be in a written form, such as witness statements from customers or supervisors worked with in the past, or it can take the form of photographs of your work, site plans, qualifications or proof of Painting & Decorating employment. If there is insufficient evidence but it is clear that you are a competent Painter & Decorator, you will be advised of what additional Painting & Decorating evidence is required which you will have to bring back to the Centre to undertake a review.

Step 3: Once all of the required portfolio evidence is complete, you will undertake a practical assessment of your skills which will be observed by our Painting & Decorating assessor. This will be followed by a recorded professional discussion to assess your knowledge of Painting & Decorating; we will aim to complete this process over a period of 2 days.

Step 4: If you are successful, you will receive your NVQ certificate through the post in a relatively short period of time. If you do not pass the assessment all is not lost: the work you have done can still count towards your qualification through OSAT.

OSAT

This route is for those looking to gain an NVQ that don't have at least 5-years in the industry, but think they have the capabilities to achieve the qualification. Not having 5-years experience means that you will have to be in employment to take the competency test. We will supply an Able Skills assessor to come to your place of work.
