Decorating courses could see more attendees if consumers take the advice of one DIY expert, who has suggested it could be cheaper for people to learn such skills than to keep on paying people to carry them out.

Melanie Griffith, assistant editor at Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, suggested passion for undertaking improvements in the home has not diminished.

But she suggested many individuals currently in their 20s and 30s may not have been taught basic DIY skills, which would make decorating courses useful to them if they want to carry out a project in their house.

Ms Griffith remarked: "I think more people, while they might be scared of learning new skills, eventually will just realise that it is going to be more expensive if they don't learn the basics."

Recent research by Bosch showed that 22 per cent of men do not enjoy performing jobs around the house, with 43 per cent admitting they are scared of failure.
