Climate change minister Greg Barker has responded to criticism of the planning system by saying he wants to remove barriers to take-up of solar panels, which could encourage more tradesmen to consider PV training.

The MP made his comments after receiving a letter from shadow energy and climate change minister Huw Irranca-Davis, who claimed many local authorities are giving out incorrect advice regarding the installation of such green power microgenerators.

Mr Barker replied by saying that he his happy to speak to his colleagues in the Department for Communities and Local Government to ensure rules relating to the work of engineers with PV training is understood, according to Business Green.

He added: "I agree that it is important that local councils are fully aware of the planning rules relating to solar panels."

The Conservative politician has represented Bexhill and Battle since 2001 and has served in his current position since the coalition's victory last May.
