Tradespersons who have taken a plumbing training course but have been out of work for more than six months could find that their employment prospects are boosted by a new government guarantee.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, its Young Person's Guarantee will offer up to 470,000 job, training or work experience opportunities over the next 15 months to young people who have been unemployed for more than half a year.

The initiative is part of the Backing Young Britain scheme, which aims to help the progression of young people's careers and is backed by a number of leading companies in the UK.

So far 472 organisations have signed up to support the programme.

Yvette Cooper, secretary of state for work and pensions, commented: "Despite the latest welcome fall in unemployment, now is the time to increase help not cut it back. We need to make sure young people do not suffer the scarring effects of long term unemployment."

People with approved plumbing qualifications could find that their job prospects are boosted as a result of the guarantee.
