The recession has had an effect on many people, with homeowners seeing the most problems.

For people that cannot afford to make significant green changes, Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, has suggested that insulation could be a cheap way around it.

"One thing we would urge people to do if they can't afford to have a full extension, is to look at the insulation of their homes – loft insulation, cavity wall insulation," he said.

"If you have got a big bedroom, with today's modern plumbing technology you can always put an en suite into the bedroom."

According to the Halifax Home Improvement Survey released in July, adding an extra room to a home may cost over £19,000, but could add £25,500 to a property's value.

A loft conversion could lead to a 158 per cent increase in a property's value, while fuel efficiency improvements could add a 251 per cent increase.
