The market for kitchen improvements is expected to pick up in the new year, according to one source, which could mean technicians with plumbing course qualifications are required.

Ronnie Whelan, editor at Kitchen Bedroom Bathroom, suggested the number of celebrity chefs appearing on television in impressive kitchens has had an influence on consumer demand for such alterations.

She predicted that tradesmen - such as engineers who have taken plumbing courses - are likely to see more business ahead of the VAT increase, but people will probably be too busy to plan for improvements until after Christmas.

Ms Whelan highlighted how important it is for people to get their kitchen layout right, adding: "Having a kitchen where you can show off your cooking skills in a kitchen design with the 'wow' factor is top of everyone's list."
