The value of the expertise gained from tiling courses has been demonstrated by one young apprentice's win in the regional heat of the SkillBuild 2010 competition.

Steven Butler, a 20-year-old who is studying at South Lanarkshire College, took first place in the roof slating and tiling category of the Scottish heat of the competition.

Other apprentices may be inspired by how well he has done thanks to his tiling courses and Mr Butler told the Stirling Observer he is delighted to have performed to such a high standard.

He was quoted as saying: "If I'm lucky enough to secure a place at the national final, my skills will be put to the test even more as there will be some really strong competitors taking part from across the UK."

The next heats to take place in the SkillBuild 2010 contest will be held in Wales at Coleg Menai on May 18th, followed by Blackpool and the Fylde College in the north-west of England.
