The new boiler scrappage scheme proposed by chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling in his pre-Budget report will be very beneficial, Rated People has suggested.

Mr Darling announced on December 9th that homeowners with an energy-inefficient appliance will be offered grants of up to £400 to buy a new, eco-friendly one.

According to Ottokar Rosenberger, director of sales and marketing for Rated People, the programme is sure to help households reduce their carbon emissions and fuel bills.

"The scheme as a whole will be instrumental in bringing a large number of homes' heating systems into the 21st century, where sustainability is of great importance," he said.

However, the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering recently announced that the proposals would only be successful if the new boilers are installed by tradespersons with approved plumbing qualifications.

The body's chief executive Blane Judd commented that such professionals are needed to offer give advice, provide regular maintenance and install the boilers properly.
