Housing minister Grant Shapps has revealed that publicly owned land will soon be made available for people to build their own home, which could boost interest in electrical courses and other professional training.

The MP made his comments at Grand Designs Live 2011 in London, saying that he wants to bring self-build projects into the mainstream.

He said: "Self builders deliver affordable, greener and more innovatively-designed homes and make a big contribution to the number of new homes built in this country."

Mr Shapps went on to explain that certain plots of publicly-owned land will be earmarked exclusively for use by such individuals, who may decide to take electrical courses to help them with their plans.

The politician stressed that he will be doing all he can to remove red tape and regulations to make the process of self-building simpler.

Last week, the Department for Communities and Local Government announced it has recruited Baroness Newlove to be a part of its team.
