Technicians on electrical courses may be interested to hear that Swedish construction group Skanska has set up a UK residential division.

According to the firm, the focus will be on building homes in London and within commuter distance of the capital, with one representative suggesting there is a significant gap between supply and demand in this area.

This may mean new opportunities arising for engineers on plumbing courses in the near future, but house-building analyst at Peel Hunt Robin Hardy stressed that it may not all be plain sailing for the company.

"If you don't have a design and development record, or know the planning authorities and the subcontractors, it's difficult," the expert told the Guardian.

The new firm will be called Skanska Residential Development.
