Student Stories

At Able Skills we get students from all walks of life and all of them come for different reasons, whether it is for a career change, for some basic skills, or just to add some skills, we get it all here. Some of the student stories are great to hear of what people have planned for the future.

Here are some recent student stories from students who have recently been training at Able Skills for various reasons.


Omar has a different story to most students here at Able Skills. He has travelled all the way from the French Alps to be with us to at Able Skills.

Since moving to the French Alps 14 years ago, he has been working as a labourer. Omar has been renovating old barns and chalets. He came back to the UK, where a lot of his family live in London, so he take the City & Guilds Carpentry course because he wanted to enhance his skills.

Glen decided he wanted a career change after working as a lorry driver, however initially he wasn't to sure which career path to take.

He came to Able Skills to take a short course in Bricklaying to see if he enjoyed it, by the end of the course he decided that it was the career path for him. Glen has now booked onto the longer bricklaying course so he can begin his new career.


Amy had been working as a waitress for the last couple of years, but she wanted to gain a proper qualification and start fresh in a brand new career. She chose to train as a Painter & Decorator at Able Skills.

She is now edging towards the end of her course and she is looking forward to start her new career. Amy has travelled down from Southampton and plans to now start working with a company then eventually work for herself as a Painter & Decorator.


William had worked in sales for 15 years, but after being tired out by the long hours and the long commute each day, he decided to make a change and become a Decorator.

These student stories just show how much a new career can change your life and all these students have really enjoyed their course and look forward to their futures.
