We recently caught up with bricklaying student, Charlotte, to have a little chat with her and find out why she chose Able Skills and her motivation for learning bricklaying.

There are many reasons why someone would want to learn trade construction skills. They might have their sights set on a whole new career. They may already be working in the trade and need to learn new skills to advance their career. They may need to formalise their existing knowledge and experience by gaining an industry-recognised qualification.

But career aside, we also see students coming through the centre who have personal projects in mind.

This was the case with Charlotte. She is doing the Introduction to Bricklaying Course to gain enough knowledge to do her own garden project.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you chose Able Skills for your training?

“I chose Able Skills because it was really convenient. I live in London and it's really easy to get to from there.”

And I saw that they just had loads of availability and flexibility and I saw that the intro course was just really affordable. It ticks all the boxes.”

How has your experience been so far on the course?

“So I’ve had a really great week. It’s kind of blown my mind.”

Charlotte went on to tell us about what she’s learnt on her first day of the Introduction to Bricklaying Course, how that quickly built into having some solid bricklaying skills and how much you can achieve even in the relatively short space of five days.

“Later that day we were building a wall, and then the next day building a bigger wall, and then building a pillar, and then suddenly it’s a chimney.”

Has anything stood out about your training?

“The instructors to me just seem like people who really know what they're doing. They've been doing it for decades and yeah, they're just really supportive and skilled.”

Can you sum up how you’ve found your learning experience with Able Skills?

“It’s felt amazing to be honest, what you can achieve in such a short space of time.”
