Find out why Jack chose Able Skills for his City & Guilds Tiling Course and how his newly learned skills will help with his new career.

Continuing our Student Stories series, we had a chat with Jack, who has travelled down from Newcastle to do the Able Skills City & Guilds Tiling course.

In this interview, you’ll find out why he chose Able Skills, how he found the course and instruction and his motivation for doing the course in the first place.

Why are you doing this course?

“I wanted a different career change. I used to do landscaping, and I was just not into it anymore, so I decided to go for a different trade and ended up taking a liking to tiling and spoke to my company that I work for that put us through the training and now I’m a complete professional tiler!”

How did you hear about Able Skills?

“Just through my company. My company has used you before, so obviously they highly recommended you. A colleague came to a plumbing course here and thought it would be great for me, and I’ve really enjoyed it to be fair.”

How have you found the training?

“Absolutely mint. There’s a few days that I really struggled with different patterns, but the introduction course was so good, I was really into it and I really wanted to get it done. And when hard bits happened, I just stuck with it, and I enjoyed it more because of what I achieved.”

What about the instruction, what's that been like on the course?

“Fantastic, [the instructor] was dead patient and comes over every time you need him. I think it was in week two of the advanced one, we were doing diamonds, and I must have shouted his name at least fifty times that day, and every time he’d come over and help us. Patient, dead kind, and a good lad – he knows his stuff!”

Do you feel you have progressed on the tiling course?

“Absolutely, I think that I underestimated how hard it can be with the patterns and that. On the introduction week, I thought, ah, this is alright. But then I got to the second week, and I thought, this is really hard actually!”

What will you be doing once you finish?

"Well, hopefully when I get back, I’ll be doing a lot of kitchen splash backs, bathrooms and all that. That’s a good starting place. And hopefully I’ll build up my experience from there.”
