Each year, we see many students come through the Able Skills Construction Training Centre.
Everyone has their own story and their own reasons for wanting to train.
Some students come to us as complete beginners ready to embark on a brand-new career. Some keep coming back for continuing professional development or for required reassessment, as is the case with certain electrical and gas qualifications. Some join us to learn a few new DIY skills and gain confidence with a personal project.
In our latest Student Story, we caught up with Lucy.
Lucy recently completed a City & Guilds course with us. She passed with Distinction and hopes to have her own business in the future.
What construction training course did you do with Able Skills?
“I completed the City & Guilds Painting & Decorating Level 1”
That’s an intensive five-week course of hands-on training, where you can build a portfolio of your painting and decorating work.
What made you choose painting and decorating? What is it about the profession that appeals to you?
“I love to see things well looked after and maintained. And I have always enjoyed DIY painting and decorating.”
What made Able Skills stand out from other training providers of further education colleges?
“It was the very flexible course timings and great facilities that appealed to me. The location too. It’s really easy to get to Dartford from central London.”
Lucy went on to mention that she found the level of teaching was excellent, all of the instructors were wonderful and very experienced.
What have you enjoyed most about the course?
“Learning so many things!”
Is there anything about the course that surprised you?
“How good it was!”
“Also met lots of lovely student throughout the five weeks”
That’s great to hear.
What do you plan to do now and what are your long-term goals now that you’ve done the training?
“I have an apprenticeship to start with and will see how that goes. Following that, I plan to have my own little painting & decorating business.”
