Sam standing in a painting and decorating work bay at Able Skills

We see hundreds of students come through the Able Skills Construction Training Centre every month, each with their own story and reason to learn new construction trade skills.

For some, it’s motivation to learn DIY skills so they can work on home projects. For others, it’s about developing skills or even embarking on a whole new career.

In our latest Student Story, we caught up with Sam. With sights on a career change, Sam is currently doing a City & Guilds Painting & Decorating course.

What course are you currently doing and why?

Sam came to Able Skills to do one of our decorating courses, initially signing up for the one week Introduction to Painting & Decorating, but after enjoying it so much, she enrolled in the five week City & Guild Painting & Decorating course instead.

“Fancied a change of career”

Sam wanted to change careers and has a few friends in the building trade.

Why did you choose Able Skills?

She’d been recommended Able Skills, highlighting that she'd heard as a centre it had good provision for adults who want to learn a new skill set in a relatively short period of time.

What are your plans once you finish the course?

After completing the City & Guilds Painting & Decorating programme, Sam hopes to start her own company providing painting and decorating services.

“It’s my ambition to set up my own painting and decorating company.”

How have you found the staff and facilities at Able Skills?

From finding out about the decorating courses to finding the centre location, Sam commented on how easy the practical elements around the course are.

“When you come into the centre every day, all your tools are clean, prepared and ready for you to use.”

The instructions on how to find the training centre were easy to follow, there’s ample parking on site, somewhere to store your food while you’re here, and the facilities are ready for you to get started each day.

“Mark has been a brilliant tutor, very patient.”

When asked about the level of tuition, Sam said that her instructor Mark really took his time to explain and demonstrate how to do things. She was given plenty of opportunities to go off on her own and practise independently.
