There may be more demand for decorating courses this summer, since people often decide to get stuck into DIY jobs around the house during periods of good weather.

This is the opinion of deputy editor at Build It magazine Anna-Marie DeSouza, who suggested that individuals may have previously been put off by the "dismal" spring weather.

In her view, there might be a particularly big rush to sort out homes and gardens before the start of the Fifa World Cup, which may have led to more interest in decorating courses in the past few weeks.

Ms DeSouza explained: "It's likely that people will venture out in the next couple of weeks and catch up on any interior and exterior home improvements that have fallen to the wayside."

Her comments were made in response to the news that B&Q owner Kingfisher experienced a drop in sales of 2.8 per cent for the 13 weeks up to May 1st.
