An industry expert has suggested it is currently an ideal time for electric cars to become commercially successful, which could in turn lead to more interest in electrical courses.

Dr Ben Lane, a representative from nextgreencar.com, highlighted how such vehicles are the pinnacle of modern fuel efficiency and petrol prices are continuing to rise.

In his view, this situation, combined with the quality of the cars being manufactured, could see electric motors become more popular, which may mean greater demand for electrical courses among engineers.

"If they are ever going to make it, now is the time. My view is that they will make it to a certain degree and much more than they have done," added Dr Lane.

A recent study by KPMG suggested urban planning and environmental restrictions could play a major role in how successful the spread of electric cars becomes.

It found that most auto executives believe China will lead the way in the industry.
