Want to get into Carpentry?

Thinking of getting into carpentry? Able Skills is the best place to start, whether you have no experience or you're an experienced carpenter looking for an NVQ. This is the place for you!

If you have no experience in carpentry but fancy your hand at the craft then we would recommend taking an Introduction to Carpentry Course.  The next step would be a City & Guilds Carpentry Programme, during which you will learn all the necessary skills to become a professional in this sector, including the theory, practical ability and health and safety.

If you've completed this and would still like to learn and advance further then you could consider upgrading to an NVQ Level 2 Carpentry Course. This will provide you with some more techniques as well as preparation for an NVQ, which will require you to be in employment and have an Able Skills assessor come to your place of work to judge your competence on site.

These are some of the practical skills you will learn:

  • Constructing studwork with opening
  • Constructing and installing door lining
  • Hanging a door
  • Fitting floor joists and installing floor coverings
  • Installing and bracing trussed rafters
  • Setting out and cutting a pair of common rafters
  • Health and Safety in construction
  • Fixing architraves and skirtings
  • Constructing and fixing hatch linings
  • Fitting locks and latches
