The Importance of a 'Gas Safe Registered' Engineer!

We teach a range of trades at our training centre including gas courses. We encourage all of our students to go on to apply to become Gas Safe Registered on completion of their gas course and or ACS assessment. By law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register to be able to safely and legally carry out work on gas appliances, this includes the installation, servicing and repair of gas appliances such as gas cookers, fires and boilers. When looking to hire a gas engineer you should always check whether the engineer is registered or not. - Today we will talk about how to identify a legally working engineer and how to get involved in gas training courses!

Gas courses

Gas Safe Registered Engineer.

According to Gas Safe Register, around 1.1 million gas jobs are completed each year by illegal and unqualified fitters. This is an issue that needs to be avoided, unregistered engineers have not passed the industry standard tests for health & safety and they could put you and your family at risk to Carbon Monoxide poisoning, fires and even explosions. The Gas Safe Register pursues their own investigations when they receive reports of illegal work and unregistered traders could see huge fines and even prison time for going against this legal requirement...

How do I know if an engineer is working legally?

The first thing to note is that Gas engineers that are registered will carry a Gas Safe ID card, which acts as a way for them to prove they are on the register. You should always ask to see an engineers Gas Safe ID card before they begin working on your gas appliances - Every ID will have a unique 7-digit license number, to check if an individual engineer is currently Gas Safe registered you can enter this number into the Gas Safe Register's website which will let you know if they are currently registered or not. Other things to look our for include:

●     That the photo is of the engineer that has come to your home.

●     The start and expiry dates. Make sure the card hasn’t expired.

●     The licence number which is embossed on the card.

●     The Gas Safe security hologram is present.

●     The engineer is from the business they said they were from.

Also looking at the back of the card you will see a list of appliances and tasks if the job that you require of the engineer is not on the back of the card that means that they have not completed health & safety checks for that particular job and therefore should not carry out work of that kind. You will also be able to check if their qualifications are up-to-date...Do not be afraid to ask to see an engineers ID card if they are officially registered they will have no hesitation providing you with the information you need!
