The importance of plumbing courses has been highlighted by an industry source, who said it can be dangerous to hire an unqualified engineer.

Richard Clarke, chairman at plumbing and heating firm1st Action, described it as "critical" for homeowners and landlords to bring in a professional who knows what they are doing.

He noted that carbon monoxide is a "tremendous" threat and said he is a great believer in putting trust in tradesmen who have completed plumbing courses and can properly check devices.

Mr Clarke's comments were made following Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, which ran from November 14th 2010.

The 1st Action representative revealed he is worried by the number of people who would not insist on hiring a plumber who has taken relevant training.

"I was surprised to find that something like 28 per cent of the people would be prepared to have their boiler serviced by somebody who was not qualified," remarked Mr Clarke.
