Careers in construction often allow people to carve out their livelihoods in the villages, towns and communities where they have been born and bred, providing sustainable and skilled careers for local people.

One classic example of this is the recent case of 17-year-old apprentice carpenter, Jamie Baird. Jamie was born at the Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital in South Wales and has spent his life so far growing up in nearby Graig-Y-Rhacca.

The youngster recently secured a place on the Y Prentis local apprenticeship scheme, which is allowing him to learn the skills and gain the qualifications needed for his chosen goal of becoming a carpenter. By complete chance now, Jamie has found himself posted to the new Beeches Village housing development – which is being built on the site of the very hospital in which he was born.

Jamie will work on the
