What is an NVQ?

An NVQ or National Vocational Qualification is a practical, work-based assessment. The test recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a job through on-site tasks. This assessment will take place wherever you are currently taking on work. NVQ Level 2 Plumbing Assessments cover the essential knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in domestic plumbing and heating.

Why is having an NVQ important?

So, without an NVQ you will still be able to carry out various domestic jobs, such as fixing taps, unclogging pipes with a City & Guilds Level 2. However, if you are looking to take your career forward and would like to work on a construction sites, big projects or for a plumbing firm then you will need an NVQ. Additionally, when looking to become self-employed it is the qualification that you are ultimately going to need to be considered a fully-qualified plumber here in the UK.

How do I complete an NVQ?

Here at Able Skills we aim to make all of our assessments and training courses as simple and straightforward as possible. When is comes to a Level 2 Plumbing NVQ there are two main steps. Portfolio completion and assessments. To start the process you will have a meeting with one of our assessors....

During the meeting they will show you an example portfolio and provide details on the kind of work that you need to gather evidence of and how to present that within a portfolio. At the end of the session, you will be given a portfolio to start work on and the contact details of your NVQ Assessor so that you can get started immediately.

After the session you will go off and look to gather evidence of yourself carrying out the various tasks talked about within the meeting. The tasks include a bathroom installation, 6 different maintenance jobs, decommissioning a system and so on. Filling out the portfolio is very straightforward and just requires evidence in the form of pictures and videos.

Next, the assessment itself. One of our plumbing assessors will visit your place of work on two separate occasions to monitor you whilst you work. This can be done wherever you are currently working, domestic or otherwise. Our assessors have years of experience carrying out these kinds of assessments and will not get in your way while you're working

They will simple look to asses your competence, knowledge and skill on the job against the industry standard. And will look for specific things such as your ability to maintain a safe working environment and installing plumbing systems.
