There has never been a better time to become an electrician - Throughout the pandemic they have continued to work and prosper safely as essential workers and many are experience higher levels of demand than ever before for a number of reasons including people spending more time at home. Today we want to take a look at the reasons you should consider a  career in the trade and how you can get started...

Electrician courses

Electricians are essential for so many reasons. As a society we rely on electrics these days for almost everything that we do, electricians who maintain this are vital. As an electrician you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of electrical equipment.

This could involve fixing problems that are reported, or installing new systems such as lighting and heating within new structures. There are so many different roles and routes for an electrician to take, not to mention the variety in environments such as domestic work, working in the construction sector, commercial building and much more.

Great earnings:

When thinking about a new career it is obvious that you'll want to know how much people earn in that role. Electrician are actually the highest earners compared to other trades. In 2020 the average electrician salary recorded by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) is £33,495, compared to £33,176 from the year before.

Remember this is the average, many electricians with experience can earn more and the sky is the limit when it comes to taking matters into your own hands and starting a business - A very real prospect for many electricians around the country.

Job for life:

At the moment there is so much uncertainty around employment - Millions of people in the UK are relying on furlough schemes to get by. Having a trade skills means that you always have something to fall back on.

Once you learn your trade it’s a skill which will see you through until the end of your life, this is a sort after skill which your friends and colleagues will be interested in seeking your help and advice for.

The role is also very resilient, the industry is not going anywhere. As a society we will always require the services of electricians - Not to mention their strength throughout the pandemic as they continue to work.

Skills shortage:

Simply put, there is more work out there than there is qualified workers. For the electrical industry this means that wages for those electricians that do have the know-how are being paid a premium for their services due to the 'skills gap'.

Over the next five years, the industry will need an additional 8,500-10,000 electricians. The future of the electrotechnical industry remains bright and very lucrative for many businesses and individual electricians, however the industry needs new, skilled people to keep up with demand.

Become your own boss:

Another benefit of working in this trade is the opportunity to become self-employed. If you’re interested in starting your own business many electricians are self employed who own and manage their own business.

This can be very empowering and can obviously increase your earning potential. This is not something you can or should do straightaway, however, after gaining experience and a customer base it can be extremely beneficial and an exciting prospect.
