Industry professionals who have gained their approved electrician qualifications after taking an electrical course might find they can improve their health and safety by following the lead of an Essex-based construction firm.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Lord McKenzie - the government's health and safety minister - recently visited workers and contractors for Higgins Construction at a building site in Basildon.

The employees at the location are currently taking part in the Do Your Bit training programme, which aims to get businesses started with worker involvement and improve arrangements for including staff in health and safety matters.

Lord McKenzie commented: "HSE places great importance on worker involvement and consultation and it's clear that employees here are motivated to play their part in ensuring health and safety is a priority."

The HSE - which hopes to protect people against risks to health or safety arising out of work activities - states there is evidence to suggest worker involvement has a positive effect on performance in health and safety matters.
