Tradespersons who have taken plumbing training courses could find themselves increasingly in demand if ideas from the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) are taken on board.

It was recently found by Communities and Local Government's English Housing Survey that homes have become more energy efficient over the last few years, with 7.4 million properties having cavity wall insulation and 15.7 million containing full double glazing in 2008.

Commenting on the figures, director at NHIC Andrew Leech said the government can go one step further by restricting mortgages to people unless they are planning to make eco-friendly home improvements.

"That is the next step I think," he stated.

"You possibly won't get a mortgage unless you are planning to increase the efficiency of the house by [around] another 50 per cent," he explained.

If the government adopts these measures, it could be that demand for tradespersons to help install new environmentally-friendly appliances sees a big surge.
