Course details

This 10-week carpentry and joinery course is designed to give you a solid foundation, including a City & Guilds qualification and a comprehensive understanding of what’s required to progress toward an NVQ. Once you have completed your 10 weeks of intensive, hands on training, you will then be industry ready which is where you need to be in order to achieve the carpentry NVQ.

During the entire 10 weeks, you will be trained and assessed to achieve the following:

Carpentry aspects:

  • Constructing studwork with opening
  • Constructing and installing door linings
  • Hanging a door
  • Fitting floor joists and installing floor coverings
  • Installing and bracing trussed rafters
  • Setting out and cutting a pair of common rafters
  • Health and Safety in construction
  • Fixing architraves and skirtings
  • Constructing and fixing hatch linings
  • Fitting locks and latches

Joinery aspects:

  • Constructing halving joints
  • Constructing housing joints
  • Constructing through mortice and tenon joints
  • Constructing angled halving joints
  • Constructing bridle joints
  • Constructing haunched mortice and tenon joints
  • Constructing stub mortice and tenon joints

This entire programme will be delivered to ensure that you undertake carpentry work which is most commonly used on site; this is to prepare you for working towards achieving the level 2 NVQ. You will be guided to understand what is required as evidence to achieve the NVQ so that once you are working within the industry, the process can be completed smoothly and in an acceptable amount of time.

NVQs are Declarations of Competence, which means they must be completed in a real working environment— not a simulated setting like a training centre. Our role is to fully prepare you for this process, and we take pride in doing so effectively.

At the end of the course, you will receive the contact details for CST Training, who will guide you seamlessly through the NVQ requirements.

Once registered for your NVQ, you may choose to obtain a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (after independently arranging and passing a CSCS test), giving you improved access to employment. When you complete the NVQ, this card can be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker card.

CST Training provides:

  • Multiple payment options
  • An online portfolio platform
  • An assessor induction delivered via Google Meets

Once registered, candidates will begin collecting evidence in their workplace and uploading it to the online portal, including:

  • Videos demonstrating on-site work (correct PPE, material handling, and trade-specific tasks)
  • Relevant site documentation, such as Toolbox Talks, Method Statements, and Briefings
  • A scheduled recorded discussion via Google Meets to complete the knowledge-based questions
  • A final Professional Discussion with an assessor, also via Google Meets, to conclude the NVQ process

After submission, the portfolio will undergo internal quality assurance and then be claimed with the awarding body. The final certificate will be issued by email.
