Course details

This 7-week painting and decorating course is designed to give you a solid foundation, including a City & Guilds qualification and a comprehensive understanding of what’s required to progress toward an NVQ. Once you have completed your 7 weeks of intensive, hands on training, you will then be industry ready which is where you need to be in order to achieve the decorating NVQ.

During this painting and decorating course you will be trained and assessed to achieve a variety of units as well as receive training which reflects ‘reality’ and also provides you with a comprehensive understanding of what you will need to do to eventually achieve the NVQ level 2.

You will be trained and assessed across the following areas:

  • How to interpret manufacturers' specifications and risk assessments
  • Calculating requirements to erect access equipment and working platforms
  • Inspecting components and completing reports
  • Erecting and working from access equipment and working platforms
  • Dismantling and storing components
  • How to prepare the following surfaces ready to receive finishing systems:
    • Timbers and timber sheet products
    • Metal surfaces
    • Trowelled finishes
    • Plasterboard
  • How to remove previously applied paint and paper ready to receive finishing systems
  • To rectify surface conditions, repair and make good surfaces
  • How to prepare the work area and protect surrounding areas, furniture and fittings etc
  • How to prepare materials for application and apply water-borne and solvent-borne coatings by brush and roller
  • Know how to clean, maintain and store brushes and rollers
  • Know how to store materials.

NVQs are Declarations of Competence, which means they must be completed in a real working environment— not a simulated setting like a training centre. Our role is to fully prepare you for this process, and we take pride in doing so effectively.

At the end of the course, you will receive the contact details for CST Training, who will guide you seamlessly through the NVQ requirements.

Once registered for your NVQ, you may choose to obtain a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (after independently arranging and passing a CSCS test), giving you improved access to employment. When you complete the NVQ, this card can be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker card.

CST Training provides:

  • Multiple payment options
  • An online portfolio platform
  • An assessor induction delivered via Google Meets

Once registered, candidates will begin collecting evidence in their workplace and uploading it to the online portal, including:

  • Videos demonstrating on-site work (correct PPE, material handling, and trade-specific tasks)
  • Relevant site documentation, such as Toolbox Talks, Method Statements, and Briefings
  • A scheduled recorded discussion via Google Meets to complete the knowledge-based questions
  • A final Professional Discussion with an assessor, also via Google Meets, to conclude the NVQ process

After submission, the portfolio will undergo internal quality assurance and then be claimed with the awarding body. The final certificate will be issued by email.
