Course details

The 18th Edition course is aimed at practising electricians, electrical contractors, supervisors, consultants, inspectors, and anyone who requires a thorough working knowledge of BS 7671. Updated for BS 7671:2018 Amendment 4, this qualification ensures individuals are fully conversant with the latest requirements for electrical installations. A basic understanding of electrical principles is recommended.

Course content

  • Scope, object and fundamental principles — structure and compliance requirements of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026
  • Definitions and terminology — practical interpretation of regulatory language
  • Assessment of general characteristics — design parameters, load calculations and modern systems including battery storage
  • Protection for safety — overcurrent protection, RCDs, isolation, earthing systems and domestic/commercial/industrial environments
  • Selection and erection of equipment — wiring systems, ICT systems and smart building technologies
  • Inspection and testing — initial verification, periodic inspection and testing requirements
  • Special installations or locations — bathrooms, medical locations, EV charging, prosumer and battery storage systems
  • Appendices and supporting guidance — tables, charts and technical references

Key updates in Amendment 4 (2026)

This course incorporates all confirmed changes from Amendment 4 — including new sections not covered in previous editions.

  1. Stationary secondary batteries
New chapter covering battery energy storage systems — safe installation and operation.
  2. Functional earthing for ICT
New requirements for earthing and equipotential bonding specific to ICT systems.
  3. Power over Ethernet (PoE)
New section addressing PoE systems for lighting, data and smart building services.
  4. Medical locations – Section 710
Major update to requirements for medical electrical installations with new testing schedules.
  5. Consolidation of Amendments 1, 2 & 3
Amendment 4 integrates all previous amendments into a single publication, making the regulations easier to use and reference. New and altered installations must comply after a six-month transition period from 15 April 2026.

This course is entirely classroom based. It introduces the wiring regulations and covers their application through expert instruction, real-world examples, and interactive exercises. Delegates are fully prepared for the City & Guilds 18th Edition exam — a 2-hour multiple-choice, open book online examination.

What to bring:

  • A current copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 (the new Orange Book) — available from the IET/BSI from April 2026
