Able Skills has a dedicated Gas Training and Gas Assessment Centre. As a provider in all areas of construction training, the Gas Centre is the natural progression for us following our successful running of all manner of plumbing courses.
This Gas Centre is fully equipped for both training and assessment purposes and is suited to those of you who are new to the industry and who are considering a career in Gas but equally, our Gas Centre is also beneficial to existing and experienced engineers who require reassessment or re training.
We have packages that are suited to all category of Gas enquiry and we can cater for all requests.
Able Skills can offer a wide range of training and assessment to the latest government guidelines in our purpose built workshop and training centre.
Our qualified team of gas trainers and assessors will provide guidance, support and assistance in a realistic environment to build confidence and competence to work safely in the gas industry.
PACKAGE 1
4 DAY CCN1 + APPLIANCES RE-ASSESSMENT
This is for CATEGORY 1 candidates who are working within the gas industry and need to re-new their qualifications. Candidates may only re-assess on modules they currently hold under the ACS scheme. This package includes:
- CCN1 – Core gas safety
- CKR1 – Domestic cookers
- HTR1 – Space heaters (Gas fires and wall heaters)
- CEN1 – Central heating boilers
- WAT1 – Water heaters
PRICE £850.00 (inc vat) This price can be reduced by £80.00 per appliance if candidates require less than 4 modules.
PACKAGE 2
5 DAY CCN1 + APPLIANCES INITIAL ASSESSMENT
This is for CATEGORY 2 candidates who have had training and experience, but have never been formally assessed, to enable them to carry out assessments under the ACS scheme. The modules are the same as for package 1 but will require more detailed paperwork.
PRICE £995.00 (inc vat) This package can also be reduced by £120.00 per appliance if candidates require less than 4 modules.
PACKAGE 3
CCN1 ONLY
This is a full core safety assessment for all gas operatives that must be renewed every 5 years. All candidates must complete CCN1 before applying for any other appliance modules
PRICE £470.00 (inc vat) 2 Days training = £150 2 Days assessment = £ 320
Note: Module training is £65 per appliance and £120 for initial assessment or £80 per appliance for re-assessment.

- DAH 1 – Warm air heating appliances.
- MET 1 – Meters
- CPA 1 – Combustion performance analysis of domestic appliances. (Mandatory from June 08)

PACKAGE 4
APPROVED PRIOR LEARNING PROGRAMME (APL)
This package is divided into 2 separate training sections, a pre APL and the main APL.
PRE APL
This course is a pre requisite of our main APL course for those of you who are considering a career within the gas industry. This particular week of training is suitable to candidates who do not currently have a background within the industry and therefore have not had any previous involvement with plumbing, pipe work or heating etc.
Additionally, this course will also be suited to those of you who do have some background within the plumbing and heating industry or similar, but who do not have any relevant qualifications or checkable evidence.
This week of training will cover basic pipework skills, gas appliance functions and the basic principles of flues and combustion to give candidates the knowledge required to undertake the main APL course.
At the end of this 5 days of gas training, you will undertake an assessment of what you have learned so far. This will determine whether or not you are ready to undertake the main APL.

MAIN APL
This is an in depth course covering all aspects of domestic gas safety as laid down by the ACS scheme, it is also recognised by CORGI as a managed learning programme. It is designed for those of you who have transferable skills; those of you who have been working within the industry in one form or another. Your suitability for the main APL will have to be established and proven to our assessors during an interview prior to the course starting. If you are unable to provide the required evidence then you will have to undertake the pre APL course first as listed above.
The main APL is also the next step for those of you who have undertaken the pre course training and have proved that you are competent to continue learning in this environment.
PRICE £995.00 (inc vat) Duration 10 days
On successful completion of the course and the necessary work portfolio (if required, see footnote) candidates will be ready to undertake the initial assessment as detailed in package 2, candidates can choose to replace any of the 4 modules in the package with CPA1.
Footnote:
Those with skills and detailed experience already working in the gas industry and can prove it to the standard laid down in the ACS scheme at the interview stage can carryout the assessment in package 2 on completion of the APL course. Those without the relevant experience will be required to complete a work portfolio, the format and content of this portfolio will be covered during induction or interview. Any amount of experience prior to the course starting can be assessed as being relevant, for more information speak to one of our experienced tutors.
If candidates fail to achieve the required level of competency in either the practical or theory assessment, it may be necessary for them to re-sit the sections which they have failed. If this situation arises an additional cost may be incurred.

Plumbing Courses:
If you are interested in obtaining plumbing qualifications to complement your gas career, Able Skills has a dedicated Plumbing Training Centre where we offer training and assessment for City & Guilds 6129 levels 2 & 3; we also have the facility to provide you with NVQ 6089 which involves assessing you out on site, in the workplace.
Electrical Courses:
Additionally, if you are looking to become Part P registered within your role as a gas engineer or a plumber Able Skills offers Domestic Installation training as well as the required qualification: VRQ Level 2 to register onto a Part P scheme.
All students are required to wear appropriate protective equipment in the gas workshops, including safety boots.
