Diversity in electrics, and the training that we offer!

Women make up 50% of the UK workforce, makes sense right? Although, the problem is that in the construction sector a working female is a rarity, luckily us here at Able Skills have been seeing more and more women take on training courses with us at our centre, which is great to see, but it's not enough!

Electrician Training at Able Skills

This is especially evident in the world of electricians, figures indicate that less than 1 in every 1,000 electrical contractors is female. In 2011, the NICEIC or National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting set up the 'Jobs for the Girls' campaign to encourage more women into the industry and redress the imbalance. Since its launch, the campaign has featured in The Sun, The Times and Waitrose Magazine and  NICEIC CEO Emma Clancy has also appeared on national TV and Radio.

Now, the NICEIC intends to hand out bursary schemes of £500 to all women who are signed up to any Electrical courses! This is a great way to encourage women who were already considering the move but never took the leap. This is a great campaign and will hopefully help these individuals but also raise awareness for women working in Electrics and the trade industry overall...

The bursary is open to women who are working in or looking to work in the electrical sector. However, priority will be given to:

  • individuals committed to making a career in the electrical industry
  • those already working within the sector
  • those already signed up for an industry-recognised qualification route into the industry - Such as a course at Able Skills!
