Able Skills has made the bold decision to steer away from Domestic Installer courses in order to concentrate more on complete electrical installation qualifications. The aim for us here is to train individuals to become FULLY QUALIFIED ELECTRICIANS – therefore extending an individual’s scope of work beyond just domestic electrics and avoiding the complexities that come with registering on to Competent Persons Schemes.
Ceasing to deliver ‘Part P’
The first electrical based courses that Able Skills ever ran were courses via the certificating body, EAL, suitable for individuals to be able to undertake domestic electrical work and self-certificate the work undertaken. This was around 2005/2006.
At that time, the qualification and training was very comprehensive, accompanied by a rigorous practical assessment and online exam. Unfortunately, this qualification ceased, and training providers were left to devise their own courses and assessment processes.
Able Skills has continued to run such courses since the abolition of the EAL qualification and we have done so very successfully.
The problem that we are finding of late is what happens to individuals once they have completed training centre devised domestic electrical courses…….
In order to be able to self-certificate electrical work undertaken in a domestic dwelling, individuals need to register with a scheme provider as a Competent Person. The process and requirements for registering with bodies such as NICEIC, Napit and Stroma etc is increasingly becoming a very grey area and understandably, for safety reasons, harder and harder. There is also indication from the industry that taking these centre based ‘short courses’ are insufficient to move you forward to scheme registration, often requiring you to have 2 years electrical installation experience.
Become a fully qualified Electrician
To avoid getting embroiled in incorrect bookings or misunderstandings of the ‘Part P’ registration requirements and processes, we have decided to concentrate only on the courses and qualifications which enable individuals to become fully qualified Electricians.
So, as of 2021, Able Skills will no longer be offering any form of ‘domestic electrician’ training courses however, this should not stop you from looking at other, better, training options.
Historically, despite comprehensive information provided by office staff at Able Skills, we have frequently encountered individuals who think that undertaking a 4 week domestic electrical ‘Part P’ course will make them fully qualified electricians – It won’t! and we really do want to get away from this.
We are now concentrating and aiming towards being a centre that provides the right training for ANY electrician, something like a centre of excellence. Able Skills is the centre that can get you to the point of being eligible for a JIB Gold Card!
Able Skills offers a range of Electrical training courses and qualifications and upon embarking on such courses, your scope of work, upon completion, can cover domestic, industrial and commercial. Able Skills is also an NVQ Assessment centre and in addition, we have our own AM2 Centre. We really can take you through the whole journey – start to finish.
We offer full time courses, weekend training options and for some qualifications, there are Home Study options.
There is no requirement at all to undertake Domestic electrical training in order to move on to full electrical training and qualifications.
Electricians courses available at Able Skills
The C&G 2365 level 2 is the industry recognised route for new entrants looking for a career as an Electrician. This Level 2 course is designed to provide and help develop regulation knowledge, practical skills and science required for electrical installation work; as the course progresses you will gain extensive knowledge of the theory of Electrics.
This is the natural progression for anyone who holds a recognised level 2 Electrical Installation qualification and is the next step towards becoming a qualified Electrician. The C&G 2365 level 3 is the industry recognised route for Electricians looking to achieve that next level of electrical knowledge and skills, providing an advanced understanding of electrical science, inspection & testing procedures, fault diagnosis and rectification and installation design.
This 3-day electrical training course will enable you to gain familiarity with the layout, content and application of BS 7671:2018 - 18th Edition Regulations. This Certificate ensures you are up to date with the latest industry regulations on wiring and the safe use and operation of electrical equipment and systems. This course is entirely theory based and is completed by way of an online multiple choice open book exam.
This course combines all of the elements of Initial Verification and Periodic Inspection and Testing.
This City & Guilds qualification is aimed at practicing electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require some update of training. This qualification helps you to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to professionally install and carry out initial verification and periodic inspection and testing on electrical installations. It is expected that suitable candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work. This is an essential skill for any electrical installer.
The NVQ is achieved via work/site-based assessment and portfolio building and AM2. Full support and guidance from an Able Skills NVQ Assessor will be provided and readily available throughout. NVQ Level 3 is a requirement for those looking to achieve JIB Gold Card status.
The purpose of the AM2 is to ensure all qualified electricians achieve a single standard that has been agreed by the employers in the industry as meeting their needs from qualified personnel. The content, structure and marking of the assessment is designed to evidence that a candidate has gained all the relevant safety critical competencies during their training process. AM2 provides a reliable and trusted guarantee of safe, high quality workmanship for the electrotechnical industry and is highly valued by employers, who regard it as evidence of competence for an electrician.
This level 4 qualification is aimed at electricians with experience across a wide range of electrical installations and with a thorough and detailed grasp of the Wiring Regulations and considerable experience of inspection and testing. It is a prestige qualification which is reflected in the challenging nature of the course and assessment.
