During 2020 electricians managed to continue to operate as essential workers and even found themselves having more work than usual in domestic settings. This is kind of obvious when you factor in how much more time the population spent at home during the pandemic. Today, we want to present a quick guide on what the average electrician rates are, how to go about pricing a job and a little about what we do and how you can become a professional electrician with our hands-on training courses...

How do Electricians charge for their work?

  • Day rate
  • By the hour
  • Fixed price for a job

So, generally electricians prefer to set a price for a specific job if they know what they are getting into. However, this is not always the case and electricians often have to be flexible which is why having an hourly rate can be useful. Electrician's often factor in travel costs to get to the job, materials, parts and so on.

What is the best way to quote a job?

When you get a call from a customer it can be very beneficial for you to visit the property and have a look for yourself prior to the actual work. Why is this useful? Well, the customer will get familiar with you, you can build up trust and it's a great opportunity to see physically what you need to do.

It will allow you to factor in any little details of the job at hand, you could even go around and take pictures on your phone. This will give you a better perspective on step-by-step what the job includes and will allow you to give a more accurate price. This will also help you to understand your materials, you could even make a list of what you will need to get a more complete picture of what the task will cost overall.

As an electrician you need to expect the unexpected. What if you open a switch box and it's not earthed. Things like this happen more often than not, which is why it is often better to over-evaluate a job rather than under.

This will eliminate you being out of pocket, it will take pressure off yourself and avoid confusion with your customer later on.

What is the standard day rate?

Right, what is the standard or average day rate? Well, for a job that is likely to take a whole day to complete an electrician would usually charge anywhere between £225 - 250 this is the industry standard. This could depend on where you are in the country and your reputation. An electricians' hourly rate on average is around £45 - 50 per hour!

What about an emergency rate?

After doing some research it looks like the average electrician charges around £80 - 100 an hour for emergency call outs. Emergency electricians work outside of usual working hours. They are available overnight, during holidays and on weekends which is why you can charge a higher hourly rate.

What about specific jobs?

If you are a newly registered electrician and you are finding it hard to figure out what you should be charging, what you are entitled to charge and generally how to price jobs, we have made a quick list below of the average price for some common electrical tasks within a domestic setting...
