What is Inspection and Testing?

It's simple, inspection and testing is the process of first inspecting an electrical installation and then testing for faults through a set of processes and procedures which must be followed and involves the use of test equipment to measure that the installation is functioning as expected, safely and effectively in accordance with the latest wiring regulations. Some level of testing should be carried out on every piece of electrical equipment at some point or another. This is an essential skill that any electrician should know, domestic installers and so on. We include Inspection and Testing courses in our new-entrant courses such as our Part-P courses for those looking to learn how to be a domestic installer from scratch!

Why is it important?

  • Firstly, the obvious, by having a qualification you will be able to show employers/contractors that you are able to carry out the testing and inspection of new electrical systems safely and correctly.
  • Secondly, completing Inspection & Testing courses (Also known as 2391 courses) is a requirement when looking to achieve a JIB Gold Card, a must have for many employers when looking to work outside of a domestic setting, which you may want to do later in your career.
  • Lastly, there have been some recent changes to the law surrounding privately rented properties and the type of electrician that landlords require. The changes mean that electricians will now need to hold an additional qualification before being able to carry out work in these properties, the qualification in question is 2391 also known as Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing. So to stay competitive and have access to opportunities in rented properties you will need this award!

What Inspection and Testing courses do we offer?

Here at Able Skills we offer both a Level 2 Inspection & Testing and a Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing! Both of these courses are aimed at practicing electricians who haven't carried out this task since qualifying and require an update in training. If you are a new-entrant then you will want to take on the Level 2 then gain some experience out in the industry before tackling the Level 3 qualification. This skill is often a difficult subject for even the most experienced of electricians, therefore gaining some real world experience will dramatically increase your chance of success in the more advanced award. These courses are completely theory orientated and will prepare you for the online exam needed for completion, which will be taken here at our dedicated exam centre.
