During lockdown we have all spent more and more time at home. People eager to make improvements to their home often go straight to YouTube for tutorials, guidance and insight. This is great and we here at Able Skills even have our own tutorial videos available for you to enjoy. However, there are a few things that would be best left to the professionals...

The video above is one of our own that aims to guide people on how to properly solder copper piping. Which we hope is useful for both people doing DIY and those on our Plumbing courses as an extra reference for them as they learn and develop their skills.

According to research 52% of people around the country took on some kind of DIY during 2020 and 75% of those used YouTube for guidance. It's amazing to see so many people giving it a go, simple plumbing tasks like fixing a blocked drain or replacing a shower head, even plumbing in an appliance like a washing machine are things that all homeowners should know.

The problem is when people start taking on tasks that would be best left to a professional. This is extremely important when it comes to gas. 15% of those embarking on renovations plan to DIY on jobs that could have gas safety implications. Gas is very temperamental and without the right knowledge and skills you could find yourself in a gas emergency and even put your family in danger from things like carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gas courses

There is a reason why by law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register - Because in the right hands gas is safe, but badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. It's not worth the risk.
